Program Description:

The PhD program in Economics at UC Merced prepares students to answer real-world questions, using frontier economic methods and insights from multiple disciplines. We emphasize rigorous quantitative training, novel data sources and an expansive view of economic theory incorporating insights from multiple perspectives. These emphases are embodied by our young, vibrant, and research-active faculty conducting research in a variety of areas, including development, migration, labor, innovation and culture as well as behavioral and experimental economics.

The university provides a pastoral setting free from distractions and conducive to research. UC Merced is located in a region of California, the Central Valley, that is culturally rich, economically important and within easy reach of several other UC campuses as well as the Sierras. As its newest campus, we provide students access to a vast array of resources associated with the University of California, the world's premier public university system. We admit only a handful of carefully selected students each year to guarantee full funding to all admitted students while cultivating substantial interaction between faculty and students.
